Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce backs Alex Rae claim that Turnbull would improve Rangers squad

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has backed Alex Rae’s suggestion that Motherwell talent David Turnbull would be a player who could improve Steven Gerrard’s Rangers squad this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender heaped praise on the 20-year-old, claiming that he has “bags of potential”, while also arguing that he will attract interest from a host of big clubs when he makes his long-awaited return to full fitness.

The youngster has been sidelined for most of this season with a knee injury, but did make cameo appearances in two of Motherwell’s last three matches prior to Scottish football being suspended because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a recent interview with the Scottish Sun, ex-Ibrox man Rae named the midfielder as one of five players he would like his former club to look into signing this summer – and Bruce is inclined to agree with his verdict on the starlet.

When asked if Turnbull is a player who could improve the Gers’ squad during an interview with Ibrox News, he said: “Yes, but only if he’s fit though.

“He got a nasty injury at the wrong time, but he has bags of potential, and he did very, very well for Motherwell before his absence.

“He’ll be looking to get back playing, and when he does and he proves his fitness, I’m sure big clubs will come knocking on the door because he is a really, really good prospect.

“He would be a good player for Rangers.”

Turnbull made quite the impression during his first full season of top-flight football last season, registering 15 goals and six assists in 30 Scottish Premiership outings.

This year has essentially been a write-off for the player, however, after a severe knee injury prevented him from wrapping up a £3.25 million transfer to the Gers’ bitter rivals Celtic at the 11th hour last summer.
