Ibrox chief Park claims Rangers will foot bill for SPFL probe if clubs give support

Rangers interim chairman Douglas Park has vowed that the club will finance a second probe into the SPFL themselves if Scottish sides back their resolution for an independent investigation.

The Gers are calling for an inquiry into the governing body over their handling of April’s vote on whether or not the lower league season would be brought to an immediate end because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ibrox chiefs have already released a 200-page dossier of information on the matter to all SPFL member clubs ahead of a historic EGM to determine whether their motion will be passed on May 12th.

That dossier came despite a prior SPFL-commissioned inquiry from auditors Deloitte – a probe which the Gers have dismissed for lacking scope and depth.

And now Park has even gone as far as offering to foot the bill for another examination if his club’s motion is passed next week.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, he said: “Cost should never be a barrier to proper governance.

“If our resolution is passed we’ll be willing to fund the costs of an independent investigation covering the scope outlined in our resolution.

What can we take from Park’s comments?
This is a bold stance, but it could prove to be a masterstroke.
One of the main concerns surrounding the prospect of a second investigation was how much it would cost clubs during a period of heightened financial uncertainty, but by vowing to foot the bill, Park is essentially offering sides a risk-free venture.
If they have nothing to invest, they have nothing to lose,
Moreover, the chairman’s unrelenting rhetoric is a clear indication of just how sure the Gers are that they have something on the SPFL.
You don’t go to these lengths, or offer to fund such an expensive inquiry, unless you are certain that there is a case to be answered.
If there are any clubs in doubt over whether or not they should back an investigation when the motion is tabled next week, Park’s comments could swing it for them.
