Murdoch MacLennan set to issue ‘firm rebuttal’ to Rangers dossier release – report

SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan is planning to “shoot down” Rangers’ claims of boardroom misconduct against the governing body in the next 24 hours, according to the Scottish Sun.

On Thursday, the Gers finally released their 200 page dossier of information on the authority’s handling of the vote which brought Scottish lower league football to an end last month, but have been met with scorn from top brass.

The SPFL argue that the document does not contain a “shred of evidence” proving any kind of malpractice on their part, although the club have since responded by claiming that they will not be “bullied into silence“.

But it is understood that MacLennan is set to go one step further in his defence on the matter prior to a historic EGM next week in which the main point of discussion will be whether or not an independent inquiry into the governing body should be called.

A source reportedly told the Scottish Sun: “There will be a firm rebuttal which will address the points made by Rangers in their so-called dossier

“There are certain things Rangers have mentioned while a number of other details were omitted.

“It’s important the clubs are given all the relevant information needed to make a decision on whether there’s a need for another investigation.”

What can we make of this?

In truth, this is wholly expected.

There was no way that the SPFL were ever going to take these allegations lying down, and short of putting the matter to bed, the dossier was always going to be the spark which ignited a second, more fierce phase of the debate.

MacLennan will speak out, as he did last month with that bizarre self-conducted Q&A he released on the matter, but ultimately, it is up to the other 41 member clubs to decide whether or not they have the desire for a battle.

Hopefully, they do not simply take the chairman’s coming statement at face value, because regardless of whether or not the SPFL deem there to be “evidence” in our dossier, there are questions that still need to be answered on a vote that was so blatantly mishandled.
