Ibrox View: SPFL statement on Rangers dossier is premature and language all wrong
We’ve yet to see the 200-page dossier that Rangers have sent to clubs in Scotland in a bid to get an independent investigation into the SPFL.
However, the SPFL have seen it and were very quick to issue an initial statement.
That was posted on BBC journalist Chris McLaughlin’s Twitter account and he highlighted one line, “If Rangers have any good reason for Neil Doncaster and Rod McKenzie to be suspended, we have yet to see it”.
And it was the language in the rest of the statement that set the alarm bells off for us.
Here are some sample lines.
“It is now a month since Rangers accused the SPFL of bullying and corruption relating to the Dundee FC return. At last, Rangers have issued their dossier…”
“Everyone in Scottish football has waited patiently…”
“An initial examination of their ‘dossier’ has failed to identify a single shared of evidence.”
Firstly, is it necessary to put out a statement like this so soon after such an extensive document of evidence has been presented?
Surely read it all first and have your legal experts go over it thoroughly? Otherwise, you could end up looking really stupid.
Secondly, the language used comes as cross as petulant and really not in keeping with how we’d expect our governing body to be communicating in public.
It’s far better that Rangers take their time and get the evidence correct before submitting it.
Far more will become clear in the next 24-48 hours and it could well be that the weight of opinion comes out against Rangers.
If it does, we’ll have to take it on the chin.
But, irrespective, this initial statement from the SPFL backs up for us that big changes need to be made.
Hopefully, this dossier will precipitate that, for the good of all the clubs in the SPFL.
