Michael Stewart attacks Rangers for ‘unacceptable’ handling of SPFL dispute
Michael Stewart has hit out at Rangers for their “unacceptable” handling of their ongoing battle with the SPFL.
The Ibrox giants are embroiled in a dispute with the governing body over their handling of the ballot which brought Scottish lower league football to an end last month amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
A report from The Scottish Sun suggested on Tuesday that initial plans to publicise a dossier of evidence the club claim to have against the governing body have now been pushed back until Thursday.
Stewart has since taken to social media to air his grievances with the Gers and what he perceives to be deliberate delaying tactics over their calls for an independent inquiry.
Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “Rangers conduct for almost 4 weeks has been absolutely unacceptable.
“They called for an investigation ‘without delay’ but have not presented any evidence. They also said other clubs had seen the evidence, if that is the case then they should’ve passed the info to SPFL board.
“They have now delayed showing the ‘dossier’ to the 41 other clubs. Again this is simply unacceptable when you have called for the suspension of the CEO & legal advisor.
“This whole process has been unsightly & extremely unhelpful.”
Is Stewart right to be so annoyed with Rangers?
There is a very fine line to be treaded here.
On the one hand, Stewart piling in on the Gers like this seems somewhat over the top.
Calling for an independent inquiry into a vote that was clearly mishandled doesn’t seem like an “unacceptable” thing to do, and while we all want instant answers in a situation like this, sometimes it is more important to ensure everything is properly formulated, rather than rushing into things.
That being said, the EGM on whether or not an investigation should be launched is edging ever closer, and you would assume that at this stage it would be more beneficial to make any relevant evidence public in an effort to convince people on the idea.
We have already seen the likes of Charlie Nicholas publicly state that he is “sick to death” of the saga, and unless things begin moving a little faster, a lot of other voices in the game may start to follow his lead.
