Ex-SPL chief Roger Mitchell claims Rangers are in ‘dire financial straits’

Former SPL chief Roger Mitchell has claimed that he has a “strong feeling” Rangers will not be able to survive the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

The businessman, a known Celtic supporter, took to social media on Wednesday to suggest that the Gers are in “dire financial straits”, and could face irreparable damages as a result of the current global health crisis.

All football in Scotland has been suspended as a result of virus, with no concrete indication of if or when the current season will be completed.

That uncertainty has led to a bitter war of words between the Gers and the SPFL, with the club calling for an investigation into the governing body for their handling of the vote which brought the Scottish lower league season to an end last month.

But Mitchell has argued that the Gers have much more pressing issues to worry about.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “I just get a strong feeling with these delays that Rangers aren’t going to make it.

“They were already in dire financial straits. I can’t see how they survive this covid black swan.

“The question is: do they take the whole of Scottish football with them!

“Critical days!”

What can we make of this?

This is a wild attack from Mitchell.

Completely unsubstantiated, it feels more like a personal grievance being aired for the sake of winding up a fanbase rather than any kind of genuine assessment of where the Gers are at financially.

Why does Mitchell feel that he has the right to comment on this, and how could he possibly know what is actually going on behind the scenes at Ibrox?

It was just over a month ago that the club themselves released a statement claiming that an investment plan is “well advanced”, with “significant investment already received and further commitments in place”.

That doesn’t sound like a club who are in “dire financial straits”, as Mitchell puts it.

Ultimately, this is a needless tweet from somebody who doesn’t need to get involved with anything to do with Rangers.
