Report – Rangers SPFL battle set to undergo stern test at Tuesday crisis meeting
As many as nine Scottish Premiership clubs could call for the top flight season to be ended immediately on Tuesday, despite Rangers’ ongoing battle with the SPFL, according to the Daily Record.
The Glaswegian giants currently find themselves embroiled in a war of words with the governing body over allegations of improper voting practices regarding last month’s ballot on concluding lower league football early because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
The Gers have been granted permission to hold a vote later this month on the prospect of launching an independent inquiry into the matter, but it is understood that a number of clubs could call for the Premiership to be curtailed with immediate effect at a virtual meeting tomorrow.
A source reportedly told the Record: “It’s looking more and more obvious that this season simply cannot be completed and that’s what the Premiership clubs will be discussing on Tuesday as a matter of priority.
“Some of them have already made it clear they wouldn’t have enough players to play on as so many would already be out of contract. And others are starting to realise there is an urgency about unlocking the prize money so that clubs can survive for as long as is possible.
“From the discussions that have been going on it’s likely that as many as nine Premiership clubs will agree it’s time to end the season.”
What can we make of this?
The reality is that it does feel increasingly as if the season will not be completed.
Between this revelation and the May 25th deadline UEFA have put on a decision over whether or not matches will be completed, it seems unlikely that there is a sensible, safe way of playing any remaining fixtures.
But even if it is decided that the campaign must be brought to an end early, that shouldn’t mean that the Gers’ demands for an inquiry are forgotten about.
Regardless of how the season is concluded, the SPFL still have answers to give, and even if Celtic are crowned champions in the coming days, they must be held to account.
