Rangers loanee confirms he does not want to return to Ibrox yet

Rangers loanee Ross McCrorie has claimed that he is eager to stay at Portsmouth until the end of the season – whenever that may be.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at the League One promotion chasers, but has been left in limbo by the ongoing Coronavirus crisis.

With his stint on the south coast initially set to end in May, it is unclear where he, along with numerous other players across the country, will stand if it is decided that the league season will be decided at a later date.

But the midfielder has made it clear that he is keen to finish the job he has started at Fratton Park.

Speaking to Pompey’s official website, he said: “I’m not sure about when contracts might finish because of the crisis – I haven’t got a clue about that side of things.

“But if we can get playing again, then it would be good to extend my deal to whenever the season would end.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here.”

Should McCrorie stay at Portsmouth?

First of all it’s commendable that the 22-year-old is so eager to finish the job that he has started on the south coast.

It shows that he is hungry, ambitious, and loyal – all of which are qualities that will never go out of fashion in the professional game.

If we’re talking about him staying at Pompey until the current campaign is ended, then absolutely, he should.

It would give him valuable experience of battling got a top, top prize in a very difficult league, and could be the only football he does get for a while bearing in mind the state the Scottish game is in right now.

If we’re talking about him staying in England beyond that, however, then no, Rangers must not let that happen.

With 2.3 successful dribbles per game in League One this season, as per Whoscored, as well as 1.4 tackles and 19.8 accurate short passes, it’s clear that McCrorie is an influential player in the centre of the park.

With 54 senior appearances already under his belt for the Gers, you would assume that he will be given another opportunity to prove himself at Ibrox at some point.

As a point of reference, Ryan Jack has completed 0.8 dribbles per 90 over the course of his Europa League campaign this term, as per Whoscored.

And while it is true that the Ibrox man outstrips McCrorie in both passes completed and tackles made, there is enough potential in the young Scot to suggest that he could slot in alongside Jack and learn his trade over the next couple of seasons.
