‘Woeful’ – Chris Sutton savages Rangers with SPFL accusation
Chris Sutton has claimed that Rangers are using their ongoing dispute with the SPFL to deflect attention away from how poor they have been since the turn of the year.
The Gers are currently in the process of calling for an independent investigation into the governing body’s handling of the vote that brought the Scottish lower leagues to an end early because of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The club claim to have a dossier of evident against the organisation proving improper practices, but as yet, have not released it into the public.
Steven Gerrard’s men are currently 13 points behind Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, and Sutton believes that it a desire to cover up their shortcomings on the pitch that is inspiring their campaign off it.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, as per the Daily Record, he said: “They’ve had this dossier of evidence for weeks, well get it out.
“What is happening is Rangers are trying to deflect, they have been woeful since the turn of the year.
“The wheels are off, they’re trying to get everybody else to look the other way, Celtic are the dominant team, they’ll carry on being the dominant team. The wheels are off at Ibrox and they are trying to deflect.
“C’mon, let’s say it as it is.”
Does Sutton have a point here?
There seems to be an overarching rhetoric, predominantly from pundits who have prior affiliations with Celtic, that the Gers are hellbent on derailing the Hoops’ ninth consecutive title.
Alan Stubbs has warned the club that calling for the season to be voided could open up a can of worms, while Michael Stewart has accused the club of acting in “bad faith”.
But surely they have to be able to see the bigger picture.
These calls for a fresh inquiry may be an inconvenience to the Bhoys, true, but surely holding the governing body to account is the most important thing here?
Forget tribalism and rivalries, this is about restoring faith in a Scottish game that is repeatedly being made into a laughing stock.
