Ibrox View: Wilson claim on potential big name Rangers exit can only be good news

RANGERS OPINION

Rangers face a summer of uncertainty in the transfer market.

The impact of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has the potential to create  chaos when the window does eventually open, and there are few players in a more precarious position than Alfredo Morelos right now.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from Ibrox for some time now, and according to a recent report from The Sun, Leicester City and West Ham have emerged as the newest leaders in the race to snap him up.

But a fresh update from sporting director Ross Wilson should go some way to easing concerns over the prospect of losing our star asset in a cut-price deal – although it would appear that Morelos’ exit is a definite possibility.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, Wilson said: “We definitely don’t want to be selling anybody on the cheap.

“When you don’t know what anything’s going to look like, everything is on the table.

“It could well be the case that that is the situation with Alfredo.”

Really then, this update is a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, losing Morelos at any price would be a blow.

After all, this is a player who has hit 29 goals in all competitions so far this season – his departure would inevitably leave a huge void to be filled.

But on the other, if he is destined to leave this summer, the money brought in from his exit could be the key to refreshing a squad that has looked terribly sluggish since the turn of the year.

As recently as last month, the Gers were still said to be demanding £35 million for the Colombian.

If we could get even half of that it would represent a sizeable boost to the Ibrox kitty.

Based on Wilson’s comments, however, the Gers will not be forced into selling for anything other than a massive fee – and that could be fantastic news for our title hopes next term.
