‘Be very careful’ – Alan Stubbs fires ominous title warning at Rangers

Alan Stubbs has claimed that Rangers could be opening up a can of worms for themselves by calling for the Scottish Premiership season to be declared null and void.

The Gers are currently embroiled in a battle with the SPFL over the governing body’s handling of the Coronavirus crisis and the vote that led to lower league football being brought to a halt early.

The club are now calling for a second ballot on whether or not there should be an independent inquiry carried out over allegations of potential malpractice during the voting process.

But Stubbs believes that the Gers should be careful what they wish for given the financial issues that have previously impacted the club.

Speaking to the Daily Record, he said: “Rangers should be very careful because if they start saying this campaign should be null and void then what about all the leagues they won when they were later found in court to be bending the rules regarding their tax avoidance?

“The difference here is that Celtic have done nothing wrong while Rangers did do something wrong and still kept those titles.

“Plus, if anything, if the season had continued, I could only see the gap between the two clubs becoming even wider.

“For me, it’s not even up for discussion because Celtic would have finished even further ahead.”

Does Stubbs have a point here?

You can see what he’s getting at, but he’s got this one wrong.

Essentially, his argument is ‘Rangers have made errors in the past so the SPFL is untouchable’.

Quite frankly, that is ridiculous.

We all know what happened a decade ago, and we all know that there are certain controversies that will not be laid to rest any time soon – especially by those who generally act as detractors to the Gers.

But regardless of those issues, there needs to be an inquiry into what has happened in the past few weeks.

This isn’t about getting the season cancelled so that Celtic can’t win the title – the reality is that we are all fully aware of how likely it is that the Premiership is already theirs.

Instead, this about carrying out a proper investigation into a voting process that was at best poorly organised – and at worst downright crooked – and getting to the bottom of it so some faith can be restored in Scottish football.

This is not about blind tribalism, this is about fairness.
