Report – Rangers crisis talks scheduled amid ongoing SPFL battle
Scottish Premiership clubs are set to hold crisis talks on Friday afternoon to discuss the ongoing conflict between Rangers and the SPFL, according to the Daily Record.
It is understood that a meeting has been scheduled for 2pm, with the dossier of evidence the Gers claim to have on the governing body set to dominate the agenda.
The report states that the club will face calls from other sides in the top flight to hand over the dossier, which they claim proves that improper practices were used during the vote that decided the lower leagues of the Scottish footballing pyramid should be brought to an end early due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
Also up for discussion will be Rangers’ plans to hold a general meeting later this month with view to holding a ballot on whether or not the SPFL should face an independent investigation over allegations of malpractice.
For such an inquiry to be launched, the Gers would require eight out of 12 Scottish Premiership sides to back their proposal, as well as eight from the Championship, and 15 from across Leagues One and Two.
So far, only Hearts and Stranraer have committed to backing the motion.
A source reportedly told the Record: “First and foremost, a number of clubs want to know what Rangers claim to have against the guys in charge of the SPFL.
“How can anyone be reasonably expected to take Rangers’ side when they haven’t got a clue what the accusations are, who they are being levelled against and on what basis?
“If it is as damning as is being claimed then they will be backed to the hilt as no clubs wants to be part of a corrupt game.”
What can we take from this?
By the end of the day, you would assume that it will be a lot clearer as to whether Rangers’ demands for an independent investigation will be met or not.
In truth, given how blatantly shambolic the whole process was, it shouldn’t matter whether or not that dossier is handed over. Something clearly isn’t right, and ordinarily you would hope that would be enough to trigger some kind of reaction from the SPFL membership.
These are uniquely testing times, however, and you can understand why some sides are sceptical about becoming embroiled in a process that has the potential to get quite ugly.
As Alex Bruce told Ibrox News recently, this will be a “hell of a fight” for the Gers to win, and one that could put off a lot of their potential allies.
With that in mind, if the dossier has to be produced earlier than planned to convince clubs that there is a case to be answered then so be it.
Maybe it is time to make it public.
