Rab Douglas: Celtic have a lot to lose from Rangers battle with SPFL
Former Celtic goalkeeper Rab Douglas has admitted that his old club have a lot to lose amid the ongoing battle between Rangers and the SPFL.
The ex-Parkhead stopper claimed that the Hoops will be just as eager as the Gers to complete the current campaign so that they can wrap up a historic quadruple treble.
Steven Gerrard’s men are embroiled in a heated war of words with the governing body over their mishandling of April’s vote on ending the Scottish football season early, with the club purporting to have a dossier of evidence proving improper practices.
And Douglas has also claimed that the Gers must be ready to put their cards on the table sooner rather than later, or risk looking incredibly foolish.
Writing in a column for The Courier, he said: “We’ve only got a couple of weeks until it’s put your cards on the table time for Stewart Robertson.
“Mind you, I say ‘only’ but I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that the statements and briefings about the SPFL voting process are becoming tedious.
“At the EGM on May 12 the Rangers managing director is going to have to show his hand. We’re either going to get embroiled in even more statements and investigations or he’s going to look very silly.
“Certain clubs have been shouting the loudest but you have hardly heard anything from Celtic. People forget that they are going for a historic quadruple treble so it’s not as if they’ve got nothing to lose from all this.”
Does Douglas have a point here?
Yes and no.
On the one hand, he is absolutely right that Celtic have a lot to lose by having the season curtailed early.
Not only would they miss out on a treble – assuming they were to win it, of course – but they would also be handed a title that is stripped of most of its integrity.
With that in mind, the Hoops should be calling for an independent investigation just as vehemently as the Gers are.
The last thing it should be to anybody is “tedious”.
This is not a matter of petty point scoring or throwing our toys out of the pram because we might not win a title that is, in all truth, probably already a foregone conclusion.
Instead, this is a matter of upholding the integrity of the Scottish game by holding its main governing body to account for a clear and obvious error in their handling of a delicate situation.
It really is that simple.
