Ibrox View: Open letter from Rangers chief to supporters is downright insulting

RANGERS OPINION

We are all fully aware of how testing this current Coronavirus crisis is for everybody associated with Scottish football, and Rangers are no exception.

With no match day revenue coming in, and with no guarantee that the remaining Scottish Premiership fixtures from this season will ever be played, this is a worrying time for the club financially.

Bearing that in mind, it’s understandable that they have chosen to open up renewals for season tickets for the 2020/21 campaign, and it is certainly an appreciated gesture that the price has been frozen.

But the latest message from Gers managing director Stewart Robertson is altogether less positive.

In an open letter sent to fans on Friday morning, the Ibrox chief revealed that in the event of the Premiership season being cancelled, fans will not be offered a refund on their season tickets for any remaining matches, but will instead receive a £25 voucher to be spent with the club on a variety of items, including tickets, subscriptions, and MYGERS memberships.

That doesn’t seem right.

There are still two league matches to be played at Ibrox before the league is due to split, with one of those games being an Old Firm against Celtic.

Even ignoring the matches that would be played at home during the Meisterrunde, £25 seems like a fairly paltry rate of compensation.

Yes, clubs are struggling financially at the moment, but so are a lot of supporters too, and to keep their money when they have no matches to attend doesn’t seem like a good look from the Gers.

Sure, there would be some fans who would be happy to waive their refund if it means that the club benefit from it, but at the very least, give Ibrox loyalists the option.

This is a disappointing message from the club, and quite an insult to us supporters.
