Ibrox View: Major continental report could be final nail in coffin for Rangers SPFL crusade
RANGERS OPINION
The Coronavirus pandemic has brought chaos to Scottish football, and Rangers have found themselves at the centre of it.
After the SPFL’s disastrous handling of their vote on whether or not the lower league season should be brought to an end prematurely, the Gers have become the most vocal opponent of the governing body.
The club have now won the right to a ballot on the subject of a potential investigation into the process behind that initial vote, but regardless of the outcome, the spectre of Celtic being handed a ninth consecutive league title on a silver platter.
And any hope of preventing that from happening looks to have taken a significant blow following a fresh update from France on Thursday.
The French league has already been cancelled as a result of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, but according to L’Equipe journalist Joel Domenighetti, authorities are set to crown top flight leaders PSG champions instead of voiding the entire campaign.
Writing on his personal Twitter account, as translated from French to English, he said: “Pro championships completed. Fixed rankings. PSG champion of L1. FFF criterion / ratio retained.”
This is just about the last thing that the Gers will want to hear right now.
By crowning their league leaders as champions, one of the major European associations is setting a precedent which would undermine everything that the Gers are battling against if it was implemented in Scotland.
Now, obviously, there is no guarantee that Scotland will blindly and sheepishly follow the actions of a foreign power, but we have also seen something similar rolled out in the lower leagues already.
The two factors in tandem could be the final nail in the coffin for the Gers’ campaign.
