SPFL chief issues fresh demands amid ongoing Rangers vote controversy

Neil Doncaster has spoken out over the SPFL’s controversial vote on how to end the Scottish football season, urging Rangers to bring forward any evidence they have of malpractice.

The Gers have called for an independent inquiry to be carried out following the governing body’s muddled handling of the ballot, which ultimately saw Dundee cast a deciding vote later than every other club in Scotland and after the previous results had been made public.

Since then, SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan has branded Rangers’ demands as “unnecessary and inappropriate”, with separate vote on whether an investigation should be brought forth scheduled in two weeks’ time.

And Doncaster has become the latest SPFL official to hit out at the Gers, with the club still yet to hand over a dossier of evidence they claim proves improper behaviour.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “It wasn’t tenable to say nothing [after the initial vote]. We knew there would be questions, we couldn’t wait.

“The SPFL board made a unanimous decision to publish the results, it wasn’t intended to put pressure on any club.

“Any allegations and evidence should be brought forward to the SPFL chairman so they can be investigated.

“It is not acceptable for vague assertions to be made without anything being brought forward.”

Does Doncaster make a good point here?

Honestly, the more we hear from the SPFL – including MacLennan’s bizarre Q&A statement – the more it sounds as if they are running scared.

If there is nothing to hide, then they should have no objection to an investigation into what happened during that first vote – and allowing an inquiry would surely go some towards restoring the faith that they have lost during this debacle.

As for whether or not the Gers should hand over their dossier of evidence, it shouldn’t really matter.

Anybody with even the tiniest bit of logic should be calling for an investigation into a vote that quite clearly wasn’t as democratic as it was supposed to be.

Hopefully, there is an opportunity for some much-needed scrutiny to be implemented.
