‘Impossible’ – Rangers hero Ally McCoist issues damning SPFL verdict amid pandemic chaos

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has claimed that it is “impossible” for football in Scotland to resume until people have stopped dying from Covid-19.

The ongoing pandemic has brought the professional game to a halt, with Leagues One, Two, and the Championship all cancelled, and the Premiership facing a UEFA deadline of May 25th to make a decision on whether or not it will attempt to complete any remaining fixtures.

But McCoist is of the opinion that there is no realistic way for that to happen while deaths associated with the virus persist.

Speaking on talkSPORT, as per The Scottish Sun, he said: “It means so much to so many people to get them outside again but we are all appreciative of the fact that in the grand scheme of things it is a far, far smaller issue.

“It is the football hierarchy’s job to try to formulate a plan but in the grand scheme of things when you are looking at it it seems impossible at this moment in time to get boys and girls back playing football when people are still dying and there is no vaccine to the virus.”

Is McCoist correct?

This is obviously the burning question, and one that definitely doesn’t have a simple, uniform answer.

At the very least, we need to see a huge drop off in the amount of people succumbing to the virus if we are to even consider bringing football back.

As fans, we all want to see a return to action and normality as quickly as possible, of course, but that cannot come at the cost of the players’ safety.

Unless we see a substantial improvement then that cannot be guaranteed.

Fellow talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan made a similar point about the Premier League, suggesting that the governing body could face corporate manslaughter charges if anything were to go wrong with the resumption of action, and when you consider that those are the stakes that officials would be gambling with, you would have to say that McCoist makes an astute point.
