Ibrox View: De Boer masterplan for Rangers title race conundrum is seriously flawed

RANGERS OPINION

It’s hard to think of a time when Scottish football has faced a bigger challenge than the one it faces right now.

With the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic causing untold chaos in the professional game, uncertainty continues to reign over how the SPFL will act to resolve the matter at hand.

While Leagues One, Two, and the Championship have been brought to an early conclusion, the Premiership is still yet to be decided, with the title race in particular proving to be a bone of contention – especially for Rangers.

The Gers may be 13 points behind bitter rivals Celtic, but there is still a mathematical chance that they could catch the Hoops, and we have seen how reluctant the club are to concede a ninth consecutive title while there is still even the faintest glimmer of hope left.

But ex-Ibrox favourite Ronald de Boer thinks he may have found a solution to conundrum.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “You don’t give them [Celtic] a trophy, you just call them winners.

“There is no champion…but you of course have to announce someone to be in a position for the Champions League and I think it’s fair to say Celtic is the winner because they are [13] points ahead.

“It’s also likely that Celtic normally had one of the strongest teams [along] with Rangers…if you have to announce a team then I’d say Celtic of course.”

While you can see where de Boer is coming from – and he is absolutely right about a decision being made on European qualification for next season – his plan simply wouldn’t be viable.

The fact is that you can’t have winners but no champions.

That’s almost oxymoronic, and it is likely to lead to uproar from one set of fans or the other either way.

If Celtic are declared winners, you can bet that they will take it as a coronation for their ninth successive title – as would anybody.

If that is allowed to stand, the Gers will revolt over it being handed to them on a silver platter.

If it’s not, then the Hoops would be equally dismayed.

It’s a nice idea in practice, but in reality, it would difficult to convince fans of its merits.
