Ibrox View: Bizarre twist in SPFL saga only reiterates Rangers suspicion
RANGERS OPINION
The ongoing battle between Rangers and the SPFL took another twist on Wednesday – and it might be the most bizarre yet.
After sending a letter to all 42 member clubs on Tuesday stating that an independent investigation would cost “incalculable” damage to the Scottish game, the governing body doubled down on their attempts to derail the Gers’ calls for an inquiry with another official release.
This time, it was the turn of Murdoch MacLennan, chairman of the SPFL, to speak out – and he did so through a 3,000 word Q&A that he conducted on himself.
The full transcript is a lengthy, rambling affair, but in it he claims that he has seen no evidence of bullying or coercion from the SPFL, that no sweetener was offered to Dundee to get them to vote in favour of the body’s initial motion to end the Scottish football season early, and perhaps most bafflingly, that the SPFL had to release the results of the ballot despite not having received the Championship side’s vote because there would have been a “furore” otherwise.
This is a deeply worrying update from MacLennan.
First and foremost, what purpose does he suppose this Q&A will serve?
Are we meant to read his answers – retorts to questions he himself penned – and suddenly have a change of heart over whether an inquiry is needed?
That would be akin to a defendant questioning themselves in court and the judge just taking their version of the truth at face value.
Secondly, the more the SPFL protest, the more suspicious they begin to look.
If they have nothing to hide, an investigation would find nothing and they have nothing to worry about.
By repeatedly trying to shut down any attempts at a proper examination of what went on during that initial ballot, they continue to give the impression that they have something to hide. How can MacLennan not see that?
If anything, all this statement does is reiterate the need for an inquiry.
