‘Unforgivable’ – Ally McCoist makes SPFL claim amid Rangers controversy

Ally McCoist has claimed that Rangers are absolutely right to demand an investigation into the SPFL’s handling of the vote over ending the Scottish football season early.

The Gers have reiterated their call for an independent examination of the ballot that led to the decision to bring Leagues One, Two, and the Championship to a conclusion amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

The demand comes despite a prior investigation, carried out by auditors Deloitte, finding no improper behaviour in voting practices.

But the Gers believe that the scope of that investigation was too narrow, and McCoist has voiced his own concerns on the matter.

Speaking on talkSPORT, as per the Scottish Sun, he said: “For our SPFL to organise a vote, and give the result of a vote when someone still has a casting vote, not just a vote that doesn’t matter, is unforgivable.

“I would like to know who appointed Deloitte, it is a simple question.

“Because if the SPFL appointed Deloitte, that’s effectively the organisation which is under scrutiny appointing somebody to scrutinise their organisation which for me is completely a non-starter.

“I might be wrong, it might be someone else who appointed Deloitte. But surely the SPFL can’t appoint someone to do an investigation about themselves?”

Does McCoist have a point here?

You can certainly see where he is coming from, that much is for sure.

If the SPFL have taken the decision to appoint Deloitte to carry out the investigation, and if the governing body do have something to hide, it’s not a huge jump in logic to suggest that there could be something fishy going on.

That may sound conspiratorial, but these are bizarre times and they are throwing up even more bizarre scenarios.

Ultimately, there is a lack of trust in the SPFL, and while it would be foolish and unfounded to accuse them of anything improper without proof, the flip side is that if they have nothing to hide, there can be no harm in carrying out another, more transparent investigation.

Refusing to do so will only muddy the waters further, and lead to more unrest further down the line.
