Ibrox View: UEFA announcement could spell disaster for Rangers
RANGERS OPINION
Rangers find themselves at the centre of one of the most shambolic episodes in recent Scottish footballing history at the moment.
After the SPFL’s disastrous handling of their vote on whether or not the Scottish season should be brought to a halt early because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the Gers voiced their concerns over the affair, and have since been granted permission to put the matter of an independent investigation to a ballot in a fortnight’s time.
But the latest update from UEFA could throw a massive spanner in the works.
The governing body have demanded that Scottish authorities tell them whether or not they plan to restart their domestic season by May 25th – just two weeks after the Gers will put their motion on an inquiry to the rest of the Scottish football pyramid.
Needless to say, that could be a catastrophe.
It either means that there will likely be insufficient time for a full and proper investigation to take place, or that the whole thing will be abandoned before it gets off the ground.
And that’s a real problem, not just for Rangers, but for Scottish football in general.
Charlie Nicholas spoke out recently against the Gers, claiming that this whole episode was just a case of them throwing their toys out of the pram because they aren’t getting their way in the title race.
But the fact is that this is a lot more than that.
This is a blatant example of a governing body dropping the ball on one of the most serious matters the Scottish game has faced in a long time.
It’s vitally important that there is some form of scrutiny in place to examine why that is the case.
Unfortunately, following UEFA’s announcement, the chances of that happening look to have taken a real hit.
