Ibrox View: PL move for Rangers big name would be painful twist in controversial saga
RANGERS OPINION
There have been times during his spell with Rangers when it has felt as if Alfredo Morelos has been public enemy number one in Scotland.
The Colombian is renowned for his fiery temperament, and has been at the centre of his fair share of controversy since arriving at Ibrox.
Last season, for instance, he saw red five times for the Gers. Even this term, in which he has seemingly turned a bit of a corner, there have been two dismissals, including a needless late red against Celtic back in December.
But it would appear that even with his disciplinary issues, there are still clubs queueing up to lure him away from Glasgow this summer.
The Sun report that both West Ham and Leicester City, now managed by ex-Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers, are keen on the 23-year-old.
And Ali Mauchlen, who himself left Scottish football to join the Foxes in 1985, believes that the move could be the change the South American needs to repair his reputation.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “I have watched a lot of Morelos and the officials do throw cards at him like confetti.
“Of course there are times when he doesn’t help himself. You can’t deny that. But, there are plenty of other occasions when I’m left thinking, ‘Come on ref’. If it was any other player I’m sure they would get away with it.
“I think it is also hard for him because he is such a physical player. He is a fierce competitor.
“I know Rangers don’t want to lose him, however I think he would be a good fit for Leicester.”
Earlier this season, Steven Gerrard revealed that he was concerned the continued victimisation of Morelos, both by fans and by other opponents, could lead to the Colombian being driven out of the Scottish game.
Based on Mauchlen, perhaps we can add referees to that list too.
And if that is the case, and if Morelos does eventually decide that enough is enough, it would be a painful parting shot if Rodgers, who has caused the Gers so much anguish in the past, was the man to steal him away.
