‘Wait and see’ – Rangers midfielder admits to talks with English club

Rangers loanee Ross McCrorie has admitted that he has held talks with Portsmouth over potentially staying at Fratton Park beyond the end of the season.

The 22-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a successful spell on the south coast, making 22 appearances in all competitions and registering five assists.

And the Scot has revealed that he is considering the prospect of an extended spell with the League One promotion chasers.

Speaking to Portsmouth News, he said: “I’ve had a few chats with [Pompey boss] Kenny Jackett and Mark Catlin but that stuff remains private.

“My contract runs at Rangers for another two years but now I’m just concentrating on getting back, finishing the season and seeing where Pompey can finish.

“I gave a good account of myself at Rangers last season and played plenty of games. For me, I wanted to go somewhere and play a lot of games week in, week out and get a sense of being treated like a proper first-team player.

“We’ll wait and see what happens. I’m still a first-team player at Rangers but since I’ve gone to Pompey it’s been good.”

Should Rangers bring McCrorie back to Ibrox?

The short answer is yes.

The only real question is whether or not it will be at the end of this season, or sometime further down the line.

Certainly, you would have to say that he has impressed during his spell in England.

With 2.3 successful dribbles per game in League One this season, as per Whoscored, as well as 1.4 tackles and 19.8 accurate short passes, it’s clear that McCrorie is an influential presence in the centre of the park.

That kind of talent never goes out of style, and with 54 senior appearances already under his belt for the Gers, you would assume that he will be given another opportunity to prove himself at Ibrox at some point.

As a point of reference, Ryan Jack has completed just 0.8 dribbles per 90 over the course of his Europa League campaign this season, as per Whoscored.

Sure, he outstrips McCrorie in passes completed and tackles made, but there is enough of a spark in the young Scot to suggest that he could slot in alongside somebody like Jack and learn his trade over the next year or two.

With that in mind, Steven Gerrard should recall him this summer and ease him into the side over the coming months.
