Ibrox View: McGregor praise for ‘quality’ Rangers teammate proves just how vital he really is

RANGERS OPINION

On paper, Steven Gerrard has a nice balance to his Rangers squad at the moment.

With the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, and Glen Kamara in the side, he has plenty of young players with high ceilings of potential, but the likes of Allan McGregor, Jermain Defoe, and Steven Davis offer him an experienced backbone around which he can structure a dressing room.

And if there was any doubt over just how important Davis in particular is to the Gers, you need only look at McGregor’s recent praise for him.

When asked to name his all-time starting XI from players he has played alongside, the stopper included Davis as his only pick from the Gers’ current squad.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, he said: “Quality as well. Even in training, you can see the quality he’s got.

“He’s been a great player over the years.”

And McGregor isn’t the only one to sing Davis’ praises in recent times.

Charlie Nicholas has described the midfielder as “stunning”, while Noel Whelan has been similarly impressed by the Northern Irishman and his “invaluable” contribution for the Gers since he returned to the club.

That many experts can’t be wrong.

Davis may be 35, but he’s already made 42 appearances in all competitions this term, and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down just yet.

He may not be the most eye-catching or dazzling talent at Steven Gerrard’s disposal, but there’s no doubting that Davis is one of the most important.
