Ibrox View: Latest manager admission must alert Rangers to ‘top five’ goal sensation

RANGERS OPINION

The truth is that if you had a pound coin for every time you hear Rangers linked with a striker in the coming months, you could likely finance the move yourself.

With Alfredo Morelos’ future at Ibrox seemingly as uncertain as ever – with the likes of St. Etienne and Atletico Madrid linked with him – there is bound to be speculation about who the Gers will call on if and when a replacement is needed.

And one man who could fill that potential void is Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor.

Sky Sports have already identified the Gers as one of the clubs keeping a close eye on him, and the news that he has reportedly turned down a new deal at The Valley will do little to quell any whispers.

But should Gerrard’s men be actively pursuing him?

If the latest comments from his current boss, Lee Bowyer, are anything to go by, then yes, absolutely.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “To try and keep him at the club is going to be tough.

“He is so big for us and I was thankful to the owners for not selling him in January, because they could have.

“Are we going to be able to replace him next season if he goes? I don’t think we will with the budget we have. He’s definitely top five strikers in this division for sure.”

Rangers

The 30-year-old is clearly a talent.

With 11 goals in 17 Championship starts this season, he evidently knows where the back of the net is, and with 2.6 shots per 90 minutes, as per Whoscored, illustrate a player who can be a real handful for defenders.

His age isn’t ideal, but if the Gers are looking for a medium-term stop gap who can plug a gap if Morelos goes, they could do a lot worse than Taylor.
