‘Be careful’ – Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce fires warning to Rangers over potential boardroom deal

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has warned Rangers against the prospect of auctioning off the naming rights for Ibrox.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender claimed that the historic nature of the Gers’ home ground means that fans would be left fuming if a sponsorship deal was ever struck to rename it.

With the ongoing Coronavirus presenting serious and potentially long-lasting financial challenges to a host of teams in Scotland, owners and board members are having to find inventive ways to bring revenue into their clubs.

But Bruce believes that the Gers must resist the urge to make some extra cash off the back of their legendary stadium.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “The big historic grounds – the ones that have been there for years and years – and carried the same name, I think you’ve got to be careful with it.

“But as I say, I can understand why clubs, especially the smaller ones, look to do it to bring in that extra bit of cash.”

Ibrox has been known by its current moniker in one form or another since it was initially opened in 1899, having originally being called Ibrox Park, before changing its name to Ibrox Stadium after a series of modernisations.

Spanish giants Barcelona have made headlines in recent days by announcing their intention to sell the naming rights to the Camp Nou for the first time in their history, with proceeds being donated to the fight against Covid-19.
