‘It’s a concern’ – Ally McCoist delivers verdict on possibility of ten-in-a-row
Ally McCoist has said that it’s a “disappointment” from a Rangers perspective that Celtic are getting closer to ten titles in a row.
However, talking on the Breakfast show on talkSPORT (Thursday, 8am), he also said that the achievement would be tainted if Celtic were handed the title this season without winning it on the pitch.
“I don’t know how they’re going to do it in Scotland. You talk about Celtic but look at Liverpool. It would be the biggest travesty given they haven’t won it in 30 years. Can you imagine the scenario if they don’t get the title?
“Celtic and Liverpool will be dying for the season to continue. They won’t want to be handed the title. Neil Lennon has the chance for a domestic treble, he’ll definitely want the season to continue.”
On ten-in-a-row as a Rangers fan, McCoist said, “Obviously, I’d be telling you a lie if I said it wasn’t a disappointment, but this league is bizarre.
“There will be an element if Celtic are given the title that it would be unfair and unjust. But you can’t make everyone happy and I wouldn’t like to be in the shoes of the people that make these decisions. But in terms of ten-in-a-row it’s a concern. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t.”
James Tavernier summed up how everyone at Rangers feels about this.
Talking on Sky Sports News (Thursday, 3pm), the Rangers skipper said, “You go to the start of the season wanting to win every game so I don’t see this as being any different. If we go back and it’s the final stage of the season we’ll want to win every game.
“We’ve got a winning mentality as players and as a club.”
It might have been slightly unfortunate use of words by McCoist but he’s right about Celtic and Liverpool wanting to get back on the pitch too.
Unfortunately, it’s out of the clubs’ hands now.
In the UEFA meeting on Thursday, there was a suggestion that other formats could be used to finish leagues if the entire season can’t be played.
That opens up the possibility of playing until things are mathematically safe or even staging a mini-tournament.
