Ibrox View: Rangers player facing ‘no-brainer’ exit decision could deal Gerrard major blow
RANGERS OPINION
Wes Foderingham has fallen firmly out of favour at Rangers since Steven Gerrard arrived at Ibrox in 2018.
The 29-year-old has made just five appearances in all competitions this season, with just two of those coming in the Scottish Premiership.
Instead, the manager has largely opted to go with veteran stopper Allan McGregor since taking the top job in Glasgow.
Understandably, that lack of action has led the Gers’ number two to question his role at the club, and he revealed earlier in the year that he has already held informal talks with Ibrox chiefs over a potential exit.
Little has changed since Foderingham’s admission in mid-January, and according to Alex Rae, it’s only a matter of time before he packs his bags.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun, the former Ibrox hero said: “I think he’ll probably move on.
“I think he’s a decent keeper and I think he’s intimated that he wants to be playing. He’s been vocal in saying he’s frustrated at the lack of game time he’s had, which is understandable and that goes back to my point.
“Do you want to sit there and play 10-12 games a season when you’re in your prime? Or do you want to push yourself and I think Foderingham comes into that bracket.
“He’s already said he’ll pursue trying to play because you train every week and want to play games. So I think that’s a no-brainer, I think he’ll most certainly move on.”
If Foderingham is to leave this summer, you would assume that there would be no shortage of suitors vying for his signature.
Out of his five appearances this term he has kept four clean sheets, as well as conceding just 0.14 goals per game from an xG of 0.37, as per Wyscout.
Those figures are actually better than McGregor’s, who has conceded 0.7 goals per game from an xG of 0.9, as per Wyscout.
Foderingham also has a short pass completion rate of 100%, and to all intents and purposes, is a very tidy, reliable keeper.
In many ways, you have to feel for him.
He hasn’t necessarily put a foot wrong at Ibrox, he has just been usurped by a consummate professional who has the ability to produce the spectacular on the regular, as previously discussed by Ibrox News.
Chances are Foderingham will leave this summer, but it will be a loss to Steven Gerrard’s squad if he does.
