Ibrox View: Expanded Premiership could be one step closer after SPFL reconstruction meeting

The Scottish Premiership could be nearing a new 14-10-10-10 structure, which would see no relegations and two extra teams joining in League 2.

The SPFL reconstruction group met for the first time this week and the expanded Premiership seems to be the most likely path forward.

If the proposal was officially put forward it would need 8/10 Championship teams and 15/20 teams from Leagues One and Two to support it. It would also need the support of 11/12 Premiership clubs.

Talking on Sky Sports News (Wednesday, 1pm), former Hearts MD David Southern said, “I do think the 14, 10, 10 and 10 model is highly acceptable.

“It preserves those clubs who would have been unfairly demoted from their leagues, Hearts, Partick and Stranraer.

“It also enables those clubs who were second place in the Championship, League One and League Two to get promoted up to the next level.

“It creates a fantastic top-flight product in terms of the Rangers/Celtic matches, the Edinburgh derbies are preserved for broadcasters and you’re introducing promotion of Inverness, the Highland derbies once again.”

There are so many questions to answer in Scottish football at the moment.

Nicola Sturgeon has said football won’t come back any time soon and has even warned against playing behind closed doors because of the prospect of fans congregating.

That’s something for the clubs and fans to mobilise against.

Meanwhile, UEFA is set for another meeting on Thursday to ratify their latest plan, which would see the European competitions finished in August.

One thing we would urge now is for everyone to come together and work towards what is best for the Scottish game.

Mistakes have been made but now we need to look forward.
