'Big test' – Exclusive: Bruce says Hladky needs more than just ability to succeed at Rangers

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has warned St Mirren goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky that it will take more than mere ability to succeed at Ibrox.

Football Insider reported that Rangers have held preliminary talks about a move for 29-year-old Hladky, who will be out of contract in the summer.

The report claims Rangers are impressed with his goalkeeping but are unsure of his ability to command the box.

Hladky has reportedly made it clear he wants to move to Rangers.

Talking exclusively to Ibrox News Bruce said, “Whoever replaces McGregor will have to be a good keeper because he’s had a great career and he’s obviously been a huge player for Rangers.

“I played with him at Hull and he’s an excellent shot-stopper, he’s a steady eddy between the sticks.

“To go and play for a club like Rangers isn’t only going to test you ability-wise, it’s going to test you mentally as well.

“It’s a hell of a jump up from somebody like St. Mirren, so if they do go and get him it would be a big test for him.

“He’s obviously got decent attributes and had a decent season, but it’s a hell of a difference to go from St. Mirren to Ibrox.

“Only time will tell what happens, but whoever does replace Allan will need to be a top, top keeper.”

Hladky has made a big impact in the Scottish Premiership, with the Herald asking whether he is the best keeper in the division.

Wes Foderingham could be on his way from Rangers as his contract expires in the summer and Allan McGregor, at 38 years old, has one more year on his Ibrox deal.

A move for Hladky would make a lot of sense but, as Bruce says, it would be a big step up and there would be far more attention on him than there has been towards the foot of the Premiership.
