Ibrox View: Rangers set to get Europa League re-start date; doesn’t bode well for Premiership

RANGERS OPINION

UEFA could give Rangers the date when their second leg of the Europa League tie against Bayer Leverkusen will be played this week.

The Daily Record has reported that Inter Milan and Roma have already been told when they will play their second leg matches in the last 16.

And they claim that August 6 is the date when the game could be rearranged for.

That’s far from ideal for Rangers.

Football in Scotland has been suspended until June 10 at the earliest, with six weeks then put aside for training before matches can be played.

That takes us to July 22, potentially just over two weeks ahead of the rearranged game with Bayer Leverkusen.

UEFA’s plan is then to play the remaining games in a short space of time – with the quarter-finals on August 10 and 13, the semi-finals on August 17 and 20 and the final on August 27.

That makes it even less likely that the Premiership can be played to a conclusion, and we don’t think UEFA will be minded to announce another postponement to the European competitions.

The SPFL now has the power to decide the rest of the season on a points-per-game basis and we think that’s now the most likely outcome.
