‘Move on’ – Exclusive: Alex Bruce claims 27y/o should cut losses and leave Rangers
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has said that Jon Flanagan should leave Rangers after a season that’s seen him start just five Premiership games.
Flanagan joined Rangers on a free transfer in the summer of 2018 from Liverpool but hasn’t settled at Ibrox.
Bruce claims that Flanagan should cut his losses and move somewhere where he’s wanted.
“I would advise anybody who’s not playing to go and move on,” Bruce said exclusively to Ibrox News.
“I know it’s difficult sometimes when you’re under contract and the club might be happy with you being a squad player.
“We don’t know what the situation is with Jon – he’s had injuries, we don’t where he’s at physically. Maybe he’s happy just playing here and there.
“But I admire anybody who chooses to bang a door down and who wants to get out of a club if they’re not playing, because ultimately, a footballer should want to play games.
“If you’re not playing and you’re not in the manager’s plans, my advice would be to never just sit there. Go somewhere else where you’re wanted.”
Flanagan has never been a regular under Steven Gerrard but this season’s seen him drop down the pecking order even further.
Flanagan is out of contract at the end of May, before Scottish football is set to resume because of the Coronavirus outbreak.
That could see him get an extension to his current deal but we can’t see him lasting at Rangers for much longer.
