‘Trust issue’ – Kris Boyd reacts as radical plan for expanded Premiership emerges
Kris Boyd has said that he doesn’t think the Premiership will be structured differently next season, despite a radical plan to see it expanded to 14 teams.
That would see Dundee United and Inverness Caledonian Thistle getting promoted, with Hearts avoiding relegation and Hamilton Acamdeical not going into the play-offs.
However, the plan would also see increased relegations in future seasons and Boyd thinks that’s what would scupper it.
Talking on Sky Sports News (Saturday, midday) Boyd said, “No, for me I don’t think it will be [expanded].
“Listen, everyone will sit down and try and get something to happen. But for me, I don’t see how it can work, you need that 11-1 vote in the top flight.
“When you look at it, to go to 14 teams, I don’t see how only one team can be relegated if that’s going to happen next season.
“I think they would need to move to maybe two teams and maybe a third team via play-off as there would be a lot of meaningless games if only one team is relegated.
“To get the reconstruction through you need that 11-1 vote. Why would teams in the bottom six right now give themselves more of an opportunity to go down the following season? For me, I don’t see how it can be voted through.
“There’s always going to be that trust issue with the SPFL going forward now and they’re going to have to address that. Everyone needs to be singing from the same hymn sheet.”
Boyd is spot on when he talks about a trust issue going forward with the SPFL.
We think everyone needs to take a deep breath and step back for a bit.
There’s no need to rush into decisions that would be difficult to row back on at the moment, with UEFA set for another meeting next week which should throw some clarity on the 19/20season.
Stopping the season now would leave Hearts open to relegation without having a chance to fight their way out of it but we don’t think expanding the Premiership is the right way out.
For now, we’d still like the 19/20 season to be decided on the pitch.
