Ibrox View: Sutton comments on Rangers are cheap and classless amid SPFL controversy

Chris Sutton has used his column in the Daily Record to fire another cheap shot at Rangers.

That’s not surprising but it strikes us that this isn’t the right time to be doing it, amid a serious Coronavirus outbreak and a spotlight being shone on the Scottish game after a farcical vote to end the league from the Championship and below were passed.

There are serious issues from that vote about how the game is run in Scotland and Sutton has just trivialised them all.

Writing in the Daily Record on Saturday Sutton said, “Steven Gerrard seems unhappy at the process used for bringing an early end to the SPFL season. I don’t know why. It might just have kept him in a job.

“It’s not UEFA who could hand Celtic the title on Thursday. Rangers had already done it. Gerrard was having a disastrous second half to the 2020 campaign when it was brought to a sharp standstill.”

Excuse us while we belly laugh.

The complaints that Rangers made about the vote aren’t about Celtic winning the league. As Sutton has pointed out, that will likely happen however the season is ended.

It’s about how the game is run and who is in charge, and while Sutton might applaud the resolution, he surely can’t be happy about how it was reached? No one else seems to be.

Going forward, that’s all that matters.

For the record, finishing the season on the pitch is what Rangers and its fans want, whether they can go on to haul Celtic back or not.

It’s what the majority of the Premier League and the Championship clubs in England want. It’s about the integrity of the game and future precedents.

It’s also about how we want the game to be run in the future. Sutton only seems interested in scoring points and pointing the finger at Steven Gerrard and that’s a big shame.
