Ibrox View: Stunning reveal from ex-Rangers man could have major impact on £10m summer pursuit
RANGERS OPINION
We are all aware of just how frustrating the transfer market can be as a Rangers fan.
It forever feels as if the Gers are in a constant battle with smaller English clubs for the last few scraps on the table, and even if we do somehow manage to beat away interest from south of the border, there is almost always the looming spectre of a rival bid from bitter rivals Celtic to contend with too.
Take, for example, our recent interest in Gillingham centre-back Jack Tucker – even his current boss, Steve Evans, has admitted that both we and the Hoops are eyeing up moves for him this summer.
Ultimately, as with most things in modern football, it boils down to a question of money.
The sad reality of the situation is that even with packed out stands and regular European competition, we simply cannot contend with the TV rights money and lucrative sponsorship deals on offer in England.
If you need any further proof of this, you need only consider Josh Windass’ recent comments on the matter.
When asked during an interview on the Keeping the Ball on the Ground podcast whether he earned more money at Ibrox or at current club Wigan Athletic, he replied without any hesitation: “Wigan”.
No offence to Wigan, who were a Premier League side not too long ago, but they have essentially become Championship relegation fodder with little in the way of financial stability, and yet they are still able to pay a player like Windass more than we can.
And that could spell danger for Steven Gerrard when he enters the transfer market again this summer.
According to Football Insider, the Gers are considering a swoop for Bordeaux striker Josh Maja as a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos.
The report also states that the 21-year-old is on a wage of around £57,000-a-week.
But over the weekend, an exclusive from The Sun suggested that both West Ham and Crystal Palace are keen to snap him up for a fee of around £10 million.
If that is the case, and bearing in mind Windass’ revelation, we can all but kiss goodbye to any hopes of landing him.
