Ibrox View: Pundit accusations of Rangers ‘vitriol’ are surely worryingly short-sighted

RANGERS OPINION

The chaos that has beset Scottish football in recent days has probably affected Rangers more than most clubs.

The Gers have found themselves at the centre of the SPFL’s voting howler after demanding an inquiry into the process following Friday’s abortive effort at find a resolution to the ongoing confusion surrounding the Coronavirus.

And surely, regardless of your affiliations or loyalties in Scottish football, you can understand why the club are so annoyed by how the situation has been handled.

Sheer incompetence from the governing body has left us with a situation whereby Dundee now have the deciding say in a ballot in which we already know how every other party involved voted.

In no way, shape, or form is that diplomatic, and every club in the country, not just Rangers, should be demanding an explanation from the SPFL – regardless of which way they voted on Friday.

TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan doesn’t appear to see it that way though.

In a massively reductionist argument he has instead chosen to focus on the Gers’ past run-ins with the governing body, implying that they could be the reason for the club’s outrage.

Speaking on the station, as per the Daily Record, he said: “Rangers have obviously got a background of having a great deal of vitriol.

“There’s a mentality at Rangers that in some ways I understand which is what happened to them in the past where everyone universally ganged up on them, to some extent justifiably so, but compelled them to drop down the leagues and have them reboot themselves again as an organisation, I think sits very much in the mind or psyche of Rangers.”

What point is Simon trying to make here?

Does he not believe that the way the SPFL have handled this incredibly delicate matter has been nothing short of dreadful?

Or does he not recognise that it is possible for the Gers to have dealt with the darker spells in their recent history, gotten over them, and still be able to judge each individual instance of authoritative incompetence on its own merit?

This feels like a very strange stance for the pundit to take, and one that will not do anything to resolve this ongoing crisis.
