Gerrard details how he would like 19/20 Premiership to end after SPFL resolution passes

Steven Gerrard has re-affirmed his belief that the 19/20 Premiership should play to a conclusion after the SPFL resolution to end all leagues below the top flight in Scotland was passed.

Dundee finally cast its vote on Wednesday and decided to support the resolution after initially voting ‘no’ on Friday.

It means that the SPFL can end the Premiership on a points-per-game basis if they don’t feel the remaining fixtures can be played safely.

That’s not what Gerrard wants, although he admitted the health of the public should come first.

Talking on The Football Show (Sky Sports, Thursday, 10.30am) Gerrard said, “Well look, I understand the situation we’re in and there are more important to things to focus on.

“Ideally, of course, I’d like to see everyone back playing and for the season to finish. But now, the main priority is everyone’s health. Football is secondary.

“But, over the past couple of days, I’ve watched the SPFL get absolutely slaughtered. And I’m waiting for Murdoch MacLennan to show leadership.

“I don’t think anyone’s got a problem with the vote, it’s more about how they’ve gone about it.”

We’re still hoping that the Premiership can be played to a conclusion.

We appreciate that Celtic will still probably go on to win the title, but we feel strongly this should be done on the pitch rather than in the boardroom of the SPFL.

What the vote does is give the SPFL the license to make that call without further discussion with the clubs.

That would be a big shame for the Scottish game and for Rangers – more for how the vote was conducted than for any other reason.

These might be incredible times but incredible times call for strong leadership. At the moment Scottish football is being let down.
