‘Absolute mess’ – Steven Gerrard delivers verdict on SPFL vote as resolution passes

Steven Gerrard has said the SPFL “looks an absolute mess” and has echoed Rangers’ calls for an independent investigation into the organisation.

Gerrard was talking on The Football Show (Sky Sports, Thursday, 10am) and said an internal investigation wouldn’t be good enough.

“I’ve been watching closely from home and it does seem a bit of a mess at the moment,” Gerrard said.

“I think Rangers stance on it, my stance on it, is I let the suits carry on doing what they’re doing. It’s their job to continue to represent Rangers.

“But from afar the SPFL looks an absolute mess in all honesty. I’m watching ex-players, pundits, media and it’s getting battered from pillar to post over how it’s handled it.

“All I ask is for the main leader of the SPFL to show some real leadership in this time. I think what he has to do now because there are so many accusations and doubts, he needs to allow an independent investigation into the set-up there to prove there is fairness and transparency across the board in Scotland. There are so many doubts there now.

“The SPFL have said they’re open to an internal investigation but I don’t think they should be able to mark their own homework.

“An expert should come in and look at the SPFL across the board.”

Absolute sense from Gerrard, who was as measured and as eloquent as we’d expect.

He refused to get into the specifics but just mirrored what most people in the Scottish game are saying now. There must be an independent investigation.

There’s no issue with holding a vote. That’s a fair way to proceed.

However, the vote needs to be conducted fairly.

Can you imagine a general election where official results were put out midway through the day? It just wouldn’t happen and if it did the authorities would be accused of corruption.

An internal investigation would just be another sham that would enable the SPFL to gloss over what’s happened. And that would be another blow to the Scottish game.

Over to you Murdoch MacLennan.
