Ibrox View: Fresh hope for Rangers in Europa League after UEFA agreement reported

Rangers could yet get the chance to play on in the Europa League after a key agreement was reportedly reached this week.

UEFA are set to meet next week in a large 55-member conference call and that should give confirmation on when the competitions are set to be finished.

However, it’s been reported this week by Spanish outlet Cadena SER (via Football Italia) that UEFA and the European Club Association (ECA) have agreed to get domestic seasons finished by early August.

That would leave the rest of August free to finish the European competitions, with one-off quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final planned.

Rangers

There are two hurdles for Rangers. The first is Bayer Leverkusen after the German side beat Rangers 3-1 at Ibrox, inflicting the first European home defeat on Rangers in 18 games.

The late goal from Leon Bailey after Rangers had clawed their way back to 2-1 could be the killer blow.

However, Rangers are still in with a shout in the tie and could yet reach the quarter-final shootout.

The second hurdle is that the SPFL is no nearer to deciding how and when the Premiership is going to play out after the farcical vote that was held last week.

Irrespective, all eyes will be on the UEFA meeting next week.

Hopefully, Scotland can fall into line and get the Premiership finished by early August too, although this will almost certainly be behind closed doors.
