English striker would be open to signing for Rangers ‘if the opportunity came up’
West Brom forward Charlie Austin has revealed that he would consider moving north of the border to sign for Rangers or Celtic if there was an opportunity to do so.
Austin joined West Brom last summer and has since scored nine goals in 30 total appearances for the English Championship promotion hopefuls.
However the 30-year-old will enter the final 12 months of his contract in the summer and has only started 13 league fixtures for the Baggies.
It means that a discussion about Austin’s future at The Hawthorns was brought up on Si Ferry’s Open Goal podcast, when the ex-QPR striker was asked whether he would consider a move to join one of the Old Firm clubs.
Austin admits that one day in the future, he would like to have a go at winning silverware with either Rangers or Celtic.
“The Old Firm derby is the pull isn’t it to play in Scotland,” Austin told the Open Goal podcast on YouTube. “You want to win things as such too. If the opportunity came up would I go? I think so yeah.”
Rangers might need a new centre-forward or two in the summer transfer window with constant speculation surrounding Alfredo Morelos’ future at Ibrox and Florian Kamberi’s loan deal will expire.
However Steven Gerrard does have other striker options and one of them is Jermain Defoe.
Do the Light Blues need another striker in their 30s? It is unlikely that Gerrard will see it that way even though Austin has been a prolific goalscorer in England’s second-tier throughout his career.
In other Rangers news, Davie Provan has been raving about this Gers striker.
