‘Surely that’s not right?’ – Darrell Currie questions SPFL tactics over vote to end seasons early
BT Sport broadcaster Darrell Currie has added to the voices of those who think the way the SPFL is going about its vote to end the season prematurely from the Championship down is wrong.
The vote was taken on Friday and was passed in the Premiership with 10 votes and in Leagues 1 and 2 with 16 votes.
However, it required eight in the Championship and it only got seven, with Dundee still to cast its vote.
It’s been revealed that they now have 28 days to cast their vote with the full results so far made public.
Currie posted a tweet on Friday evening saying, “Very strange to release part of a result before voting has closed. Leaves those clubs who haven’t voted yet with either an unfair advantage or in a position of great pressure. Surely that’s not right?”
The SPFL vote – Our view
The SPFL said on Friday of the vote: “The alternative is further weeks, and possibly months, of uncertainty and financial hardship for dozens of clubs which are desperately looking for a way to survive.”
Then, when the vote wasn’t passed, it became apparent that clubs have 28 days to cast their vote.
However, by releasing partial results early, they’ve undermined the whole process.
The pressure on Dundee is now immense and that’s certainly not how these votes are meant to be conducted.
Every club should be free to vote however it wants within the guidelines set out by the SPFL themselves.
Yes, there are important issues to be dealt with that could impact on club’s very survival. But this isn’t the way to go about things.
