Ibrox View: SPFL showing total incompetence after Rangers official statement

Rangers have released a statement that shreds the competence of the SPFL after a dramatic day on Friday.

Clubs voted on whether to end the leagues in Scotland from the Championship down.

That ended with Dundee holding the casting vote in the Championship with seven clubs voting for the proposal to end the season.

Dundee have 28 days from Friday to cast its vote. If they back the plan the seasons below the Championship will be ended immediately with final results worked out on a points-per-game basis.

The Premiership would use a similar model if the remaining fixtures can’t be completed.

However, Rangers are furious that its Members Resolution was kicked out as it was deemed as not competent by the SPFL board.

The resolution is to keep the season alive indefinitely but pay out prize money immediately to counter the financial hardship clubs are facing from the Coronavirus outbreak.

Rangers state that they sought assistance from the SPFL and heard nothing, only for it to be kicked out on Friday.

And in an extraordinary statement, Rangers claim that they’ve heard from other clubs who say they have been subject to attempts to “bully and coerce” them into voting for the SPFL’s resolution.

That’s really not what the game needs now.

It was reported in the Daily Record that the SPFL have claimed they didn’t receive any request for assistance with the wording of the Rangers resolution until Thursday evening.

But Rangers put out an official statement on its resolution on Wednesday. The SPFL knew it was coming and questions over the timing are surely just a smokescreen, especially with the remarkable claims of them bullying clubs.

Whatever solution is reached for the 19/20 season has to be with the full and willing support of its member clubs.

Any attempt to ride roughshod over them sets a really dangerous precedent for the future and seriously brings into question the SPFL’s own competency.
