Ibrox View: UEFA threat must be a hollow one but football world needs unity right now
SPFL clubs will vote this week on whether the Championship and Leagues 1 & 2 should be ended immediately with final positions worked out on a points-per-game basis.
This vote won’t apply to the Premiership – yet. But it’s been said that it is possible it could end the same way.
We’ve already said we think that would be a terrible way to end the season and not just because it would hand Celtic the title.
Hearts chairman Ann Budge – who would see her club relegated if the season was ended now – has already said she won’t vote to end the campaign.
And the BBC has reported that UEFA has threatened that European places could be in threat if seasons were ended prematurely.
This would obviously be the disaster scenario for Rangers, with Celtic getting handed the title and then being denied European football.
We can’t see any way this would happen but now is not the time for UEFA to be issuing hollow threats.
The future of the game as we know it is potentially under threat and the football world needs to stick together.
We don’t want the season to end early and we don’t think it will. But we also want to see some leadership and progressive thought – similar to the plan put forward by the EFL chairman Rick Parry on Thursday.
He confirmed they are looking at finishing the season in 56 days behind closed doors. The SPFL should be unveiling a similar plan.
