Ibrox View: Rangers show class in official statement over SPFL vote
We’re looking for our club to provide direction at the moment and Rangers did that with a classy statement after news of the proposed SPFL vote broke.
The vote, set to take place on Friday, could see all leagues from the Championship down ended on a points-per-game basis.
A decision on the Premiership has been postponed.
Putting Rangers aside for one minute – and this vote doesn’t directly affect us – we think all leagues across the UK should be finished.
That’s the only way to safeguard the integrity of the game and not set a dangerous precedent for the future.
The official Rangers statement said the same thing and called for financial help to be made available to ensure the safety of all Scottish clubs.
It said: “For the avoidance of doubt, Rangers firmly believe that the 2019/20 season is only complete when all 38 games have been played to a finish.
“Nevertheless, we are conscious of the ongoing financial hardships faced by many clubs within the Scottish game.
“As a club, Rangers will immediately propose a member’s resolution which would release prize money to be distributed to all clubs throughout Scotland urgently.”
Rangers went on to say, “It is abhorrent that certain clubs could be unfairly relegated if the current SPFL proposals were implemented. We must future proof the Scottish game.
“Any restructure of the SPFL or other solutions to the current impasse must be afforded time to scrutinise in detail and consider all options.”
We couldn’t have put it any better ourselves.
Why are we rushing towards decisions that can’t be reversed so soon?
That happened with the non-league in England, which saw many leagues voided. The FA received a barrage of criticism and a petition from clubs urging them to reconsider.
The SPFL should take its time and come up with a plan to see the 19/20 season finished. And it should be working on a financial package to help those who need it the most.
We’re proud of our club and the leadership it’s showing on these issues.
