‘Big boots to fill’ – Ibrox Exclusive: Alex Bruce reacts to mooted Rangers pursuit for 21y/o
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has claimed that Josh Maja will have “big boots to fill” if he does replace Alfredo Morelos at Rangers.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that Steven Gerrard will have to dig deep to find a player who can reach the same heights that the South American has in Glasgow.
Football Insider reported earlier in the week that the Gers were considering the 21-year-old amongst a host of candidates who could step into the breach if Morelos is offloaded this summer.
Maja joined Bordeaux from Sunderland last January, but has struggled to establish himself as a first team regular in France, making just six league starts this term.
And Bruce has claimed that it’s hard to tell whether or not Maja will be good enough to have the desired impact in Glasgow.
When asked if the Gers could unearth a gem by signing him during an interview with Ibrox News, he said: “They need to, don’t they?
“When you haven’t got the millions to spend, like Steven Gerrard hasn’t, you need to go and find somebody to replace Morelos, and it’s the most difficult place on the pitch to find, a goalscorer.
“It’ll be tough, everybody will be out looking for the same. But that’s what Steven is paid for and it’ll be interesting to see who they replace him with.
“If he [Maja] is the man we’ll just have to wait and see, but they’ll be really big boots to fill if they do lose Morelos.
“The experience of playing in Britain will help him a little bit, but you can’t tell how somebody’s going to do. If he can take his chances, he’ll be a good acquisition.”
Maja has amassed 24 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring eight goals in the process.
He has also registered three assists in that time.
