‘Tremendous’ – Ally McCoist blown away by latest Rangers financial update
Ally McCoist has hailed Rangers for setting a “tremendous” example by implementing a 50% wage deferral for all coaching and playing staff.
The club confirmed on Monday that their squad had taken a significant pay cut until July in an effort to ensure that non-playing staff do not have their own incomes reduced.
The financial situation in Scottish football has been worsened immensely by the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, with no indication of when things will return to normal north of the border.
But McCoist has heaped praise on the Gers for trying to do their bit to alleviate the crisis for those who need the most help.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “The players set a tremendous example in 2012, in very different circumstances, and once again they’re showing the way.
“It’s brilliant that every single player and member of the coaching staff has agreed to a 50 per cent wage deferral. You can only applaud them for that. Just as it was in my day, there are people working behind the scenes who really matter.
“Rangers are setting a really good example, but I would never criticise other clubs for not doing it because clearly they are not in the same financial position.”
Does McCoist have a point here?
Of course he does, yes.
The Gers deserve full credit for making an active, voluntary decision to try and keep their most financially vulnerable staff members afloat in these tricky times.
Sure, the players will still get paid what is owed to them, albeit several months down the line, but the fact remains that this is an example of the more fortunate doing what they can for the less fortunate in a time of crisis.
That is an example that should not just be heeded in the world of football, but across society writ large.
Of course, as McCoist points out, there will be clubs who cannot follow this example, but for those who can and choose not to, Rangers have reminded them of how things should be done.
