Report – SPFL provide major update on Rangers title hopes
Rangers could see their title hopes dashed if the SPFL push ahead with a potential vote to terminate the Scottish Premiership season, according to the Scottish Sun.
The national outlet reports that the governing body will hold a video conference today with view to holding a ballot on whether or not Leagues One, Two, and the Championship should be called to halt, with current league standings essentially determining where each side will finish.
And while authorities are holding off on following a similar course of action with the top flight, there is an increasing likelihood that the competition could be resolved in the same way if the remaining fixtures cannot be played in the coming months.
A statement from the SPFL, as reported by the Sun, reads: “SPFL clubs are to vote on a resolution recommending the termination of the 2019/20 season in the Ladbrokes Championship, Ladbrokes League 1 and Ladbrokes League 2, with final season placings determined by points per game in league matches played to date by each club.
“The resolution also recommends that matches in the Ladbrokes Premiership remain postponed for the time being, to give the best possible opportunity for the remaining 2019/20 fixtures to be played.
“However, if the SPFL Board determines that the remaining Premiership matches cannot be played, the Ladbrokes Premiership would also be terminated, with final season placings determined on the same basis.”
What does this all mean?
Honestly, this is the news that we have been desperate not to hear.
Of all the potential outcomes, the absolute worst would be seeing Celtic have the title handed to them on a silver platter.
Granted, they are a mile ahead in the league, but with those two Old Firms left to play, and with a game in hand, anything could still happen.
Obviously, it sounds as if the most preferable situation is to complete the season as planned, but with every passing update, it feels as if the chances of that happening are growing slimmer and slimmer.
