‘I’d get lynched’ – Ex-striker lifts lid on Rangers transfer saga

Former Norwich City striker Grant Holt has lifted the lid on the series of events that nearly saw him join Rangers during his playing career.

The 38-year-old has revealed that Ally McCoist was eager to take him to Ibrox during his tenure in the dugout, but the move was shut down by ex-Celtic midfielder Paul Lambert, who was Holt’s manager at Carrow Road at the time.

The ex-Scotland international supposedly rang the target man to tell him that he would be “lynched” if he allowed him to join his old adversaries from the blue half of Glasgow.

Speaking on talkSPORT, as per the Scottish Sun, Holt said: “To be fair I remember Paul Lambert coming to me and it was the funniest phone call ever.

“He said Ally McCoist has just phoned and he wants to take you to Rangers.

“One, I will get lynched off the Norwich fans if I let you leave. And two, I’d get lynched even more if I let you join Rangers.”

What can we make of all this debacle?

More than anything, it just serves to reiterate how deeply that Old Firm rivalry truly runs.

The fact that Lambert – long since retired from his role at Parkhead and at that point managing a side at the other end of the UK – still felt as if he would get it in the neck if he allowed one of his players to join the Gers, shows just how intense the dislike is between the two clubs.

We will never actually whether or not he would have been chastised in the way that he assumed he would be, but the fact that he didn’t even want to find out illustrates once again that when it comes to rivalries, there are few as bitter as the Old Firm.
