Ibrox View: Superb gesture from under fire Rangers talent shows true hallmark of greatness

RANGERS OPINION

It’s safe to say that this season has not been James Tavernier’s finest at Rangers.

The skipper has come in for criticism from the likes of ex-Ibrox hero Kenny Miller, and has seen his output drop from 17 goals and 20 assists last term to just three goals and 15 assists this time around.

Furthermore, it is understood that his time in Glasgow could be coming an end, with Football Insider reporting that he has made it known that he wants to walk away at the end of the season.

But for all of the criticism and his reported dismay behind the scenes, the 28-year-old has really stepped up to the plate amid ongoing fears over the financial impact of the Coronavirus.

The Gers confirmed on Monday that all players and coaching staff have agreed to a 50% wage deferral for the next three months in an effort to ensure that non-playing staff do not have to suffer a pay cut.

And The Athletic has since reported that Tavernier was one of four players who instigated the voluntary decision amongst the dressing room, alongside Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, and Ryan Jack.

If that is the case, then kudos to Tavernier.

He may be coming under fire and facing an uncertain future, but a selfless act like that is the mark of true leadership, and should be commended.

Those who can afford to spare a little in these concerning times could really ease the burden on other, less financially stable people by doing so, and hats off to Tavernier, and the rest of the Rangers squad for realising that.

This is a brilliant gesture, and one that should be praised thoroughly.
