Top agent claims PL giant duo have enquired about Rangers big name
Both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have enquired about signing Rangers loanee Ianis Hagi in the summer, according to top Romanian agent Giovani Becali.
The 21-year-old has proven to be a hit at Ibrox since arriving from Genk in the January transfer window, and the Gers are understood to have an exclusive option-to-buy clause worth around £4.5 million written in to his deal.
But Becali has suggested that there are a number of European bigwigs also courting a potential swoop for the playmaker.
As quoted by the Scottish Sun, he said: “I have been asked personally by Jose Mourinho [Spurs] and Txiki Begiristain [City] about Ianis Hagi.
“They wanted to know about him and how he was getting on. So there’s a lot of top people in European football who know all about Ianis and what he can do
“I happen to think Ianis is on a good plan at Rangers.
“I think Rangers will sign him because he is a player who has that little extra piece of creativity and skill.”
What can we take from this claim?
It’s hard to tell really.
Is Becali being genuine, or his trying to generate hype around a player who probably represents Romania’s brightest footballing prospect at the moment?
Certainly, you wouldn’t be surprised if it was the latter – although, Hagi has been impressive since he arrived in Scotland.
So far this season he has averaged a 58.1% dribble completion rate – 4% higher than Ryan Kent’s – as well as 3.32 accurate crosses per game, as per Wyscout.
The latter figure is also 0.69 higher than Kent’s this term.
Has he done enough to attract attention from some of the biggest sides in Europe? That’s really a matter of opinion, but we would be inclined to argue not just yet.
Has he done enough to justify Rangers paying £4.5 million for him at the end of the season, whenever that may be? Absolutely, yes.
